The primary role of a Hunger Action Advocate is to assist congregations and groups to become engaged with the poor in their own communities and in other countries by addressing immediate needs and long-term solutions. They provide a link with local, regional and national ecumenical agencies which address issues of direct hunger relief, hunger-related development assistance, public policy advocacy, education and interpretation about hunger and lifestyle issues, including environmental justice. As advocates of others, they provide a “switchboard” for these agencies and the national Presbyterian Hunger Program (PHP) to resource, alert, and mobilize Presbyterians for specific hunger action.
Some things your Hunger Action Enabler can do for your church:
- Attend and provide information meetings on hunger and poverty issues
- Preach; present Minutes for Mission on hunger, Cents-Ability, One Great Hour of Sharing, and other related topics (including environment and peacemaking); present Children’s Sermons on these topics
- Present Bible studies/adult education classes using PC(USA) curricula:
- Just Eating? Practicing Our Faith at the Table
- Hunger No More
- Isaiah’s Challenge to the People of God
- And train leaders so they can do the teaching!
- Help you begin or expand a successful monthly food drive
- Work with you to enhance or add to your Mission program
- Work with Mission and Christian Education Committees
- Help with promoting the One Great Hour of Sharing Offering
- (Almost) anything else you can think of—just ask!
